About me
I'm Ken Ono. For almost a decade I've worked as a fractional CTO — embedding with early-stage teams to help them build products, hire well, and make sound technical decisions. I've done this across healthcare, fintech, blockchain, social media, analytics, and more.
Before consulting, I co-founded Angoss Software Corporation, a data mining company where I spent 30+ years building products, selling to Fortune 100 companies, and negotiating OEM deals with Microsoft, Siebel, and PeopleSoft. I've also held VP and CTO roles at NexJ Systems, Myant, and Rangle.io.
How I work
No two engagements look the same. Sometimes I'm writing code alongside the team. Sometimes I'm hiring the team. Sometimes I'm assessing a codebase, rebuilding an architecture, or helping a founder figure out what to build next. The common thread is that I like getting my hands dirty on hard, interesting problems.
I keep things lean — a few subcontractors when the project calls for it, but no agency ambitions. I'd rather go deep with a small number of clients than spread thin across many.
What I care about
I optimize for fun and interesting work. After almost 10 years of consulting, I've learned that the best engagements come from founders and teams who are genuinely excited about what they're building. If the problem is hard and the people are good, I'm in.
I'm also building Wandir, a social app for the nomad community. My wife Hendrika and I bought a Winnebago Travato in 2019 and spent years traveling together — from Lake Superior to the Florida Keys. After Hendrika's long battle with cancer ended with her passing, I ventured to the mountains out west and Mexico. These journeys shaped how I think about what matters, in work and everything else. When I'm not working, I'm probably cycling, planning the next road trip or just enjoying life with my partner Ellen.
